Where do you draw the line between upper MG and lower YA, or lower and upper YA? Content? Language? Themes? Who decides what’s “appropriate” for readers at a given age? How do the tastes and expectations of adult readers influence YA?


Amanda Sellet is the author of By the Book: A Novel of Prose and Cons. During her previous career in journalism, she wrote book reviews for The Washington Post, personal essays for NPR, and music and movie coverage for VH1. She has an M.A. in Cinema Studies from New York University. After a mostly coastal childhood, she now lives in Kansas with her husband, daughter, and cats.
