  3. Upload or copy your submission materials into a Google Doc within your Google Drive.

  4. Under “Get link”, click on “Change to anyone with the link”.

  6. Click on the “Copy link” button, then click on “Done”.

Your submission will be sent to the team you have selected. Someone on the team will complete your critique. They will save your materials to their computer and complete the critique in a Word Doc.

When the critique is completed, they will send you an email from the official team email account. They will attach the marked up Word Doc to the email with their notes.

If you have Gmail, you already have one! Or you can sign up directly at http://drive.google.com/ by clicking on “Go to Drive” and then “Create Account.”

FAQ

Q: Can I select a specific person from the team to complete my critique?

A: Unfortunately, we are unable to assign critiques to specific team members. Our professionals will be completing critiques as they have time, so we have intentionally left the assignment open in order to try to provide you with the most timely feedback. Please try to select a team that you would be happy with feedback from any of the members.

Q: What if I want to buy more than one critique?

A: You will need to fill out the form and complete your purchase separately for each critique you wish to buy.

Q: How long will it take to receive feedback?

A: We’re unable to guarantee a turnaround time on your materials. However, we encourage our professionals to complete submissions within a month. We have assigned multiple professionals to each team to try to ensure that at any given time, at least one of them will be available to complete submitted critiques.

Q: What if I have questions about my feedback?

A: Our professionals are not obligated to answer any follow-up questions. However, if they are open to it, they will indicate so within their message when they return your feedback. Questions sent some time after feedback was received are unlikely to be answered.

Q: Do I have to submit using a Google Docs/Drive link? Can I submit a Word Doc file?

A: In order to streamline feedback and minimize documents and files being exchanged, we have opted to use only Google Docs/Drive for materials submission this year. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept file attachments directly. However, if you are unable to use Google Docs/Drive and wish to submit your materials as a Word Doc, please email us at [email protected] and we will arrange something with you.

Q: Do I have to submit my materials right now?

A: You will need to submit your materials at the time of payment. However, you do not need to complete the form right away. Our submission form will remain open until February 28, 2021. Our professionals will have until March 21, 2021, to complete submitted critiques.

Q: Will my selected professional “sell out”?

A: Because we are operating with teams rather than on an individual basis, selection options will not sell out. However, the individual professionals on the team may or may not be available to complete critiques at the time you submit your materials, or they may already have completed as many as they wished to do this season. We are unfortunately not able to tell you if this is the case, so please select a team that you would be happy with feedback from any of the members.

Q: What happens if no one completes my critique?

A: We will strive to ensure that all buyers receive the critique they paid for. However, in the event that your materials have not been critiqued by March 21, 2021, we will issue you a full refund.

Q: What if I forget to submit my materials after purchasing a critique?

A: Unfortunately, we are unable to follow up to check that all purchased critiques have been submitted. It is your responsibility as the buyer to remember to submit your materials to the team or have someone do it on your behalf. Any purchased critiques for which materials were not submitted by February 28, 2021 will not be refunded unless extenuating circumstances prevented it; email us at [email protected] if you find yourself in such a situation.

Q: What if I change my mind after purchasing a critique?

A: If you no longer wish to receive the critique you purchased, you have not yet received your feedback, and the submission deadline of February 28, 2021 has not passed, you may email us at [email protected] to request a full refund. Please include your receipt or order number.

Q: How long do I have to leave my submission’s Google Doc available?

A: Once you have received your feedback from your critiquer you can either delete or set private your Google Doc. If no one has completed your critique by March 21, 2021, you can delete or set private the Doc after that date.

Q: What do I do if I have issues with the feedback I received?

A: Unfortunately, critiquing, like reading, can be very subjective. We hope very much that you will find the feedback from the professional useful and in line with your vision for the manuscript. If you disagree with what the professional says, try stripping away their advice on how to fix it and simply look at what they’re suggesting needs fixing. To quote Neil Gaiman, “When people tell you something’s wrong or doesn’t work for them, they are almost always right. When they tell you exactly what they think is wrong and how to fix it, they are almost always wrong.” If, however, you feel the feedback is very weak, incomplete, or vague, please let us know at [email protected] so we may follow up on it. If we agree, we may offer you another critique for free with a different professional.

Q: What do I do if I have issues with the way I was treated?

A: If you feel that the person who completed your critique was unprofessional, harassing, abusive, derogatory, or dismissive toward you or your work, please contact the WriteOnCon team at [email protected]. DO NOT reply to the email sent by your critiquer as we are unlikely to see your reply and cannot take action.

Q: Does my Critique Boutique purchase include conference admission?

A: No. This year to make things easier and clearer for everyone, we opted to separate registration from critique purchases. You can purchase conference admission at our registration page: https://www.writeoncon.org/register/

Q: I have a question about the Critique Boutique not covered here.
