Showcase: How to Give Kick-Ass Critiques
We asked the writing community for their top questions on giving critiques. See what our viewers asked in the comments.
This event originally aired Saturday, January 18, 2020.
When Olivia Hinebaugh isn’t writing fiction, she can be found writing freelance, making art, discovering new songs on Spotify, texting her writing buddies, or folding laundry. She lives near Washington, D.C. with her spouse, three kids, a dog that looks like a coyote, and a one-eyed cat. The Birds, the Bees, and You and Me is her debut novel.
What are a few things you’ve seen that are unhelpful in critiques?
What are the pros and cons of meeting with a critique group in person versus having an online interaction with a CP?
How do you handle critiquing something you really don’t think will be successful?
Thanks Olivia. This was very helpful. I appreciated your suggestions and problem-solving suggestions. Critiques are something that I continue to work on.
Loved, loved, loved the low-tech presentation format! Thanks Olivia for this great talk.
I really liked this. Very helpful. I just started working with CPs again after a couple years of not writing and my skills are so rusty, so its very nice to have this to point me in the right direction. I often worry I am too cheerleadery and not critical enough, and that my partners are not getting what they need to get better.
