Hi Adrianna–A lot of people think that MG humor has to be about body noises (hey, farts are funny!). Do you have any favorite examples of books that appeal to the more sophisticated side of MG humor?

What elements make a successful comedic novel for children and young adults? And how can a children’s book stand out with a unique sense of humor?

Is the secondary character who tells bad jokes constantly (think Ralphie in Magic School Bus) overdone at this point?

Since humor is so subjective – how can we know ourselves if something is actually funny? 🙂

Do you think the art of humor can be taught, or must it be innate to some degree? Do you have any resources or book recommendations for learning more about it?

Finally, if time: Where are great places to go, in your opinion, for humor inspiration.

Can you comment on the humor found from the different sensibilities of Hispanic and white tween voices.
Also I am a white writer but my husband is hispanic (Mexicano) and our children have married Latinos. I write about my bicultural grandchildren. Do you think this is “cultural appropriation?”

Do you have any tips for how to write funny ‘sarcasm’? Whenever I try to write characters as sarcastic, they always end up sounding mean or snarky…

Definitionally, Sarcasm is mean. I think what you’re wanting to write is verbal irony. ( I don’t know if Adrianna answered this, as the audio isn’t working for me).

How do you make the humour sound like it isn’t coming from a middle aged writer? 🙂

Yes! I’ve tried different browsers too (they said on Twitter some issues were caused by using Chrome) but no difference in another browser for this issue.

It’s impossible to even know what she’s saying, hope they can fix it somehow after, I was really looking forward to this one!
