FAQs
We believe everyone should be fairly compensated for their time and work – goodwill and exposure just don’t pay the bills. With the relaunch of WriteOnCon in 2017, we decided to implement a system that would allow us to make sure all of our speakers and organizers received something for their time. Thousands of people-hours go into planning and running the three-day event, which requires thousands of dollars to support everyone.
But we still want to make sure that the conference remains accessible and affordable to all writers. The campaign allows us to raise the funds we need to keep the conference going, but at levels that nearly everyone can afford. Admission starts at a mere $5 for access to the conference’s blogs and podcasts. For $10, you get all that plus entrance to the weekend’s live events.
And because we know that even $5 can be impossible for some people without access to credit cards/PayPal or with tight budgets, we still continue to offer our keynote speeches and critique forums for free – no admission required.
New for this year we’re also making it possible to Sponsor Admission for Other Writers. We’ll make sure the tickets go to writers who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend. Learn more here.
The entire conference takes place right here on writeoncon.org. With your admission purchase you will be given a login and password to use on our site to access the conference. Attendance instructions are emailed to all attendees the week before the conference weekend, including a link to the URL where you will be able to access the events.
You can pop in any time during the three day event and the week that follows. Blog posts, vlogs, and podcasts go live every half an hour, but can be enjoyed at your leisure. Live events take place every hour; you can interact with the speaker through the comments section of the streaming video. Special instructions will be provided for pitch events.
Important: This year all services come bundled with General Admission. Please note that while you will get access to all content with General Admission, you won’t be able to attend the live events. You can Upgrade from General alongside your purchase.
Full Admission adds the ability to attend live events as they happen via streaming on our blog. Live events are only live during their hour-long scheduled time slot; after this an archived copy of the video will be available for viewing. Extended Admission buys you an additional month of access. Time Traveler admission gives you Extended admission, but with the bonus of access to all archived content from previous conference years.
All the Campaign perks/services come bundled with General Admission! Please note that while you will get access to all content with General Admission, you won’t be able to attend the live events. If you’d like to upgrade your ticket from General, you can add that to your purchase with this item.
If you only want to buy your 2020 ticket, without any perks/services, you can do that here.
You may have noticed our admission prices have gone up a tiny bit this year. As WriteOnCon grows so does our need for funding. We are working hard to keep prices as low as possible while still providing the quality you’ve come to expect from us.
To help offset the increase, this year we’re making it possible for you to Sponsor Admission for Other Writers. If you can afford to sponsor we’ll make sure the ticket goes to someone who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend. If you’d like to apply for a ticket, make sure you sign up for our mailing list to find out when and how the giveaway will be held.
In addition to paying all of our speakers a small honorarium, and providing our organizers with a modest wage, the money raised through admission will be used to cover operational expenses such as website hosting and functionality upgrades, extra bandwidth to make sure the site doesn’t crash due to traffic load, raffle items and shipping, PayPal fees, and, of course, the ever-present taxes. After all of our costs are accounted for, we break even each year.
The purchase price of critiques offered during the fundraising campaign includes your conference admission, a small administration fee to cover our organizer’s time in coordinating the critique, and PayPal fees – totaling about $10-25 depending on the cost of the service. The remainder of the money goes to the professional providing the critique service.
Our fundraising campaign runs from November 1 through December 6, 2019. Perks are first-come-first-served, so be sure to swing by early so you don’t miss out!
The WriteOnCon conference will take place from Friday, February 21 to Sunday, February 23, 2020. General and Full admission expires on March 1st, while Extended and Time Traveler admission expires on March 22nd. The critique forums will open on February 14th and will remain open until Extended admission closes.
You will still be able to sign up for the conference even after the fundraising campaign is over, but the cost of each admission level may go up. Also, professional critiques and services are only available during the campaign and will no longer be available to purchase after the campaign ends on December 6, 2019.
Don’t worry! You don’t need to write or illustrate kidlit to participate in the conference. The conference events will provide craft and industry knowledge that applies to writers and illustrators across the board, and much of it can be helpful to people involved in other areas of the industry, too.
If you’re busy in February but would still like to enjoy the conference events, you can purchase Extended or Time Traveler admission and receive access to all conference materials through March 22, 2020. You can also choose to purchase Anytime Archive Access throughout the year, which allows you to explore all our previous content for one month.
And finally, you could still help support us by spreading the word! Share this page, re-tweet our account, email your critique partners. Are you a member of SCBWI or a local writing group? Are you participating in NaNoWriMo or know someone who is? Be a pal and let them know about our campaign! We here at WriteOnCon thank you.
