A lot of people pitch standalones “with series potential.” How do you know if your book *really* has series potential?

Did you leave some smaller threads of your narrative in book 1 open-ended so that you could continue them in book 2, even if you didn’t know for sure that there would even be a book 2 yet?

What kind of things or details can you look to cut out if you need to get your book to be able to stand alone? It’s hard to cut things when I I want it to be a sequel, so where do I start?

What’s your opinion on a series that may shift time periods , and therefore sub-genres, as it progresses through the books?

Do you think pitching series is more successful in certain genres? For example, are agents representing the fantasy genre more open to series, where worldbuilding can be such a big aspect?

Personal question: Do you find that the muse strikes and you can knock out the whole series back to back or do you work on projects in between?

How does the approach differ with companion novels that happen in the same world but with different characters and storylines, compared to the approach with a series? Would you query these differently?

Were all the books in your series the same sub-genre? Do you think its better to keep them consistent or switch it up a bit to add variety?

I’m currently writing the first book in a four book series. When I query, should I mention that I have three other books for the series or no? If I should mention them, how should I describe them or the story arc?

Would you recommend considering self-publishing if the first book in a planned series can’t be made to be standalone for traditional publishing/querying?

Hello, I just finished the first book in a planned trilogy. I’ve done a lot of editing on my own and with beta readers. Would it be prudent to find an editor first or query an agent right off the bat. Thanks!
