I’m in the planning stages of writing a chapter book series. Do you have any tips on creating a character that might help me later when coming up with multiple storylines? (For Saadia Faruqi)
Also, any contemporary plot lines you feel are overdone or cliche and should be avoided? (for everyone)

How do you deal with the “aging” of contemporary stories? How do you make sure the stories “age well” (or not after all)?

How do you keep a contemporary story from feeling overly cliched while using a familiar trope?

Have any of you set a contemporary story outside of the USA? Was this accepted or did you have to change the setting to a US setting?

How do you keep a story from sounding too cliches while still using common character and plot tropes?
How do you deal with reader feedback if you write about controversial issues in YA? As an African American Muslim woman, I write characters who look like me but deal with things people don’t assume that demographic deals with. (i.e. teenage pregnancy, predatory grooming by a teacher)
(i.e. I did just sign with an agent, hence the question)

How much time do you generally spend creating landscapes and settings? How much detail do you like to add? How do you know if it’s too sparse or too much?

Can you talk about your very first critique partner experiences? How did you find her/him, how did the process work, any advice? Thanks!
As a disabled writer, I write YA contemporary romances starring disabled leads. How can I navigate a market where stories written by abled authors are often prioritized over #ownvoices?

Interesting conversation with some great answers. Some things to think about and I look forward to using the 100 things challenge. Thanks for the inspiration and also for the excellent book recommendations.
A great session! I write contemporary MG and have had two ms on submission collecting lots of champagne rejections. You’ve given me some ideas for how I can strengthen my work through adding more specifics and deepening characters. Thanks for all the tips!
What is your process for brainstorming contemporary story ideas with great hooks?
Do you set your books in real locations or make them up? Why?
What makes a YA contemporary high-concept?
